 At Northstar Dental, we offer dentures to give you back your natural smile. However, before getting dentures, it's important to know they come in two varieties - complete and partial dentures. The former can be used if all teeth are missing while partial dentures are best for people with a few missing teeth. If you have missing teeth, dentures are a great option to replace them.
Complete Dentures
Complete dentures come in two different versions. Immediate or conventional. The conventional dentures are made after tooth extraction, and the gums have healed. Often, our patients are ready for a conventional denture placement after about 12 weeks from the day of teeth extraction.
In contrast, immediate dentures, as the name suggests, are made before the procedure and will be placed immediately after the extraction. In this case, the patient won't have to be without teeth as they heal.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are meant to replace a few missing teeth and are removable. This means you can remove them and place them in the mouth at any time. The dentures come with a gum framework, are pink in color, that is similar to the natural gums which hold the teeth in place. Often, these dentures are suitable for patients who still have a few natural teeth left in either the lower or upper jaw.
These dentures are more beneficial compared to the complete dentures since they fill the spaces in between teeth and also prevents the remaining teeth from shifting positions.
How They are Made
The process of creating dentures takes quite a while with some taking a few weeks, which includes several appointments. After our dentists settle on a suitable denture, they will make impressions of your oral cavity. This includes your jaws and gums to help them get precise measurements, gum relation, and the space between them.
The next step includes creating models which will be the same shape as the dentures. After they are ready, you’ll be asked to try them several times to make sure they fit well without any discomfort. Also, the dentures will be examined further for shape, fit, and color before the casting the final denture. Sometimes, there may be a need for slight adjustments after casting the final denture.
As you'd expect, new dentures come with a bit of discomfort and may feel odd while in the mouth, at least for the first few weeks. However, it would help if you got used to them afterward as the cheek muscles and tongue adjust to the new appliance. You may also get a little soreness or irritation or increase in saliva flow during the first few times you'll wear them. Again, this shouldn't be a cause for concern because they'll go away with time.
