If you are looking for ways to treat tooth decay, then dental crowns may be your best option. Our professionals at Northstar Dental, have the necessary expertise and technology to fit dental crowns. Tooth decay will eat away your tooth, thus causing it to lose its natural shape, strength, appearance, and size - crowns can help to restore these teeth.
A crown will come in handy since it will go over the tooth to cover it and restore its natural look. Not only is it suitable for people with tooth decay, but also people with weak or broken teeth can also use crowns. Cosmetic modifications, covering dental implants, and holding dental bridges in place are also other reasons for having a crown.
Before installation, you’ll have the chance to discuss the type of crown you’ll want to be installed with our qualified dentists. Among the options to choose from are: stainless steel, metal alloys containing platinum or gold, all-resin, porcelain, cerec and ceramic crowns.
The Dental Crown Procedure
Installing crowns requires at least two visits to our clinic. In the first step, our dentists will take some x-rays to examine the roots that will support the crown and the surrounding bone. If the tooth is found to have extensive decay, then a root canal treatment may be necessary.
If everything is okay, you will receive anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth. Afterward, we will file the affected tooth along the sides and the chewing surfaces to ensure the crown fits well. The amount of filling will depend on the crown, which is also dependent on the level of decay. For instance, if decay has eaten away a large chunk of the tooth, we will have to use filling material to create strong support for the crown.
After the tooth is ready, putty or paste will be applied with the purpose of making a tooth’s impression to fit the crown. In some cases, a digital scanner may be used to make an impression. These impressions are necessary to make sure the new crowns will not interfere with your bite.
These impressions will then make their way to our dental laboratory for crown fabrication. This will take up to three weeks, and if the material used is porcelain, it’ll be important to match the shade to the surrounding teeth. In the meantime, you’ll have a temporary crown fixed in the affected area.
In the second visit, the temporary crown will be removed and the permanent one fitted. The first fit will be to check whether the crown fits and if the color matches the surrounding teeth. If everything checks out, the permanent crown installed.
After the crown installation, you may find it a bit sensitive, especially after the anesthesia wears off. Sometimes, it may feel a bit odd or discomforting, but this will pass after a while of getting used to the new crown. Also, dental crowns are durable since they can last up to 15 years.
