a female patient puts her hands up with an anxious look on her faceWe love coming in to see our co-workers here at the dental office because we think they are a friendly bunch. However, we understand that many adults do not feel the same way about dental offices as we do. If you dread coming in to visit our dentists, it is possible you may have dental anxiety. Here are some tips for understanding your dental anxieties and how to talk to your dentist about your anxiety so that you can relax during treatment.

Symptoms of Dental Anxiety

Are you not sure whether you have dental anxiety? The American Dental Association says that about one in three adults has some fear of going to the dentist. During research studies, adults have reported that they fear pain and dental tools. There are several symptoms you can look for to determine whether or not you have dental anxiety.

You may notice that you are sweating at the thought of visiting a dentist, and your heart may begin to beat faster. You can become faint and dizzy as well. Some younger patients, such as children, can become tearful, breathe quickly, and even become angry. Other patients try to mask fear with anger or humor.

If you have dental anxiety, it is not your fault. Anxiety is how your body responds to a perceived threat.
