However, if you have a tooth that is constantly aching, it may be a warning sign that you have an abscess. Abscessed teeth can lead to larger infections and problems in your mouth. Here are some warning signs your tooth may be abscessed.

Severe Pain

One of the earliest warning signs you may have an abscessed tooth is severe pain. In many cases, the pain can spread to your ear, neck, or jawbone. Many people describe abscessed tooth pain as constant and throbbing. While some minor tooth pain can be relieved with over-the-counter pain relievers, an abscessed tooth will not be relieved with OTC pain relievers. You may also notice pain when you are chewing.

Swelling

Another warning sign of an abscessed tooth you need to know about is swelling. You might notice swelling in your mouth, underneath your jaw, or along your neck. This swelling is part of the infection that created the tooth abscess. The larger the swelling is, the worse your infection is.

Fever

It is not unusual to run a fever if you have an abscessed tooth. Abscessed teeth represent a serious infection, and your body will run a fever as a way to fight the infection. In fact, a fever may be one of the first signs you have an abscessed tooth.

If you have any of the warning signs of an abscessed tooth, it is important to seek dental treatment. If you don't get your abscess treated, you run the risk of the infection spreading to other parts of your body. You could also lose teeth and even bone. The earlier you get an infection treated, the sooner you and your mouth will feel better.
